What is RDS?
Respiratory distress syndrome- immaturity of respiratory system (a lot in prem babies)
What is the treatment for RDS?
prenatal steroids (prevention), bagging, oxygen support
What causes nutrition diff in babies?
poor blood supply to gut, absent swallowing, sucking, coughing, gagging reflexes
What causes jaundice?
Limited glycogen stores (low blood sugar)- deficient clotting
What is ROP?
Retinopathy of prematurity
What causes problems with kidneys in babies?
dehydration, immature tubular function (low sodium)
4 long term problems for prem babies…
cardiac problems, cerebral palsy, visual hearing impairments, SIDS
3 things examination of new borns should include…
check hips
check lips/palate
check eyes
What heart problems can babies have?
heart murmurs, holes
