Neo-Piagetian & Info Processing Theories of Cognitive Development Flashcards
How do neo-Piagetians differ from Piaget?
They describe increasing complexity of stages in terms of child’s info processing system or upper limits or constraints on levels of functioning. They combine info processing and Piaget theories recognizing roles of both endogenous (bio maturation) and exogenous (social learning and experience) in cog development.
Describe Information processing theory
Cog processes of human mind compare to fx of computer programs/processes; Process info through logical rules/strategies and have limited capacity for nature & amount of info that can be processed; Like computers can be improved through hardware & software changes, children can become better info processors or thinkers via brain & sensory system changes and learning rules/strategies for processing info better
