What is a needs assessment?
Systematic way to analyze a problem
May be used to hypothesis a solution
How do we know who needs a needs assessment?
Target state - Current state = Gaps or needs

Who are the external stakeholders within a needs assessment?

What are the modes of gathering information?
Focus groups
Survey
Open feedback form
Secondary data
How do we pick a mode to gather information?
By being culturally competent and choose a mode that’s going to match the group we’re trying to capture
Focus group
A structured manner of gathering some more qualitative and perhaps some quantitative information
Targeted questions that have been established in advance to try to glean information from a group
Gather diverse voices across that community or target group
Survey
Computer based, paper-based or phone based
Finds information about accessibility, interest, using scales, or other modes of looking at needs and preference
The Delphi approach, is trying to come to a consensus among the group
Open Feedback
Different forums through social media, internet-based, or paper-based
May also be from patient surveys on satisfaction
Secondary Data
Epidemiology information, county records, tax records, demographics that that help us to inform the access and characteristics of our community
May be looking at some of the urban planning information or community resources to try to come to a consensus on how to best develop not only a program but also its implementation

Why would we use a SWOT analysis in a needs assessment?
Useful in thinking about the needs of the community and trying to place that program within a framework of what might be appropriate and where there’s redundancy or where there might not be the need for this type of program
