Define needs and give examples
Needs are defined as things that are vital to sustain our life. Required to survive.
Examples:
- food
- water
- safety
- love
Define wants and give examples
Wants are defined as preferences or desires - things we would like to have but do not really need to survive.
Examples:
- television
- car
- money
- computers
Define specific needs
Specific needs are common all individuals and groups. Individuals, families and communities will prioritise these needs differently according to their current circumstances, but the ultimate aim is to achieve wellbeing.
What are the six specific needs?
(SHESEA)
- Sense of identity
- Healthy
- Employment
- Security and safety
- Education
- Adequate standard of living (food, clothing, shelter)
Define SENSE OF IDENTITY
An individuals idea of who they are.
Influences self esteem and confidence.
Effected by the roles that the individual plays within their life, education and significant life events.
Define HEALTH
Include the five dimensions of health
Five dimensions of health: - Physical - Social - Emotional - Mental - Spiritual Achieved by the balance of all five dimensions. Different ages can present different challenges.
Define EMPLOYMENT
Devoting time and energy towards a goal payment, profit or commission. Helps an individual by: - Recognition of talents - Reward of wage - Work ethic - Life structure - Opens new opportunities - Provides income for essential needs and wants - Creates a sense of belonging
Define SECURITY AND SAFETY
Safety and security refers to our desire to feel protected and safe from threat. Threats being: - Exposure (weather) - Theft - Physical or emotional harm
Define EDUCATION
Education refers to the process of learning; of acquiring knowledge and skills.
Education such as: - School - TAFE - University - Jobs Or informal education such as: - Trips, Tours and Family outings
Define ADEQUATE STANDARD OF LIVING
Adequate standard of living refers to primary needs: food, clothing, water and shelter that are required by all people.
In society these needs are usually satisfied within a family setting, though some require community and government support, such as:
- Salvation Army
- Centrelink
Standards may change based on dietary requirements and age.
What is Maslow’s hierarchy?
Maslow’s hierarchy is a model to explain needs, behaviour and motivation, you cannot skip levels and you can go down levels.
From top to bottom:
- Self-actualisation
- Self esteem
- Love and belonging
- Safety and security
- Physiological
What does SELF-ACTUALISATION involve?
- Morality
- Creativity
- Spontaneity
- Problem solving
- Lack of prejudice
- Acceptance of facts
What does SELF ESTEEM involve?
- Self esteem
- Confidence
- Achievement
- Respect of others
- Respect by others
- Self respect
What does LOVE AND BELONGING involve?
- Friendship
- Family
- Sexual intimacy
What does SAFETY AND SECURITY involve?
- Security of body
- Security of employment
- Security of resources
- Security of morality
- Security of family
- Security of health
