What is necrotising fascitis
Rapidly spreading infection of the deep fascia
What are the 2 types of necrotising fascitis and what are the differences in what causes them
Type 1 -> mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
Type 2 -> group A haemolytic sterp.
What are some of the causes of necrotising fascitis
Trauma
Surgery
Co-morbidities (e.g. diabetes)
How does necrotising fascitis present
Severe pain
Necrotic & blistering skin
Systemic features (fever and tachycardia)
Creptius (due to subcutaneous emphysema)
Necortising fasciitis can often cause cracking soudns when you touch the skin
What is this cause and what causes it
Crepitus
Caused by s/c emphysema
What does necrotising fascitis have a mortality
As patient’s who have are already ill
How is necrotising fascitis managed
Urgent surgical debridment
IV antibiotics
Referral to plastics
Treat underlying cause
