2 causes of tracheal deviation
atelectasis
large pneumothorax
large pleural effusion

instruct patient to do what to view tracheal movement
swallow
look for what when swallowing
normal tracheal movement
presence of a substernal goiter (abnormal)
palpate trachea
acknowledging what
move side to side
slight “crunching” is normal but trachea should not be stuck
how to thyroid gland
middle finger just below cricoid cartilage
index middle and ring finger side by side along lateral border of trachea
one side then the other
normal thyroid is
not palpable or is small, soft and non-nondular
single nodule on thyroid gland is
suggest cancer
systemic metabolic disease is
diffuse enlargement and/or multiple uniform nodules
inspect TMJ for
swelling or redness
palpate TMJ for
location of TMJ
for range of motion
1 finger each side just in front of tragus of ears
range of motion of TMJ notes
open jaw: 3-4 finger widths
protrude jaw forward: bottom teeth should go in front of top teeth
