Neck Anatomy Flashcards
What are the positions of the IJV and EJV relative to the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
IJV- Internal to SCM
EJV- External to SCM
What are the two biggest branches of the external carotid artery?
Superficial temporal (up into temple, ant to ear) Facial (comes up laterally just under mandible)
What structures are supplied by external and internal carotid arteries?
External: Most of head and neck
Internal: Straight into brain (circle of willis)
What are the four major structures of the carotid sheath?
Common carotid artery
Internal jugular vein
Vagus nerve
Deep cervical lymph nodes
What are the 4 infrahyoid muscles? Which neck triangle are they found in?
Omohyoid, sternohyoid, sternothyroid & thyrohyoid Muscular triangle (of ant triangle)
What are the boundaries of the anterior neck triangle?
Sup: Inferior border of mandible
Post: Ant border of sternocleidomastoid
Ant: Midline of the neck
What are the boundaries of the posterior neck triangle?
Inf: Middle 1/3 of clavicle
Post: Ant border trapezius
Ant: Posterior border of sternocleidomastoid
Which structures form the floor and roof of the neck triangles?
Floor: Clavicle
Roof: Inferior border of the mandible
What is the role of the infrahyoid muscles and what nerve innervates them?
They depress the hyoid bone
Innervated by ansa cervicalis (C1- C3)
What sort of joint is the atlanto-axial joint?
Synovial condyloid (can move in two planes- biaxial)
What type of joints exist between bodies of the cervical vertebrae?
Synovial cartilaginous joints
