Contraindications
Allergy to the medication being administered
Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
Confirm protocol or orders for medication and 6 rights of drug admin PMRDTD
Procedure 3
Explain the procedure, side effects and that the patient is not allergic to the medication
Procedure 4
Select the appropriate medication for administration
Procedure 5
Inspect medication for packaging sterility, date, color and clarity.
Procedure 6
Connect the reservoir and mouthpiece to the t piece
Procedure 7
Connect oxygen tubing to nebulizer and oxygen access port
Procedure 8
Pour pre measured medication into nebulizer base (use 3-5 ml of saline to dilute)
Procedure 9
Keeping the nebulizer upright set O2 flow rate to 6lpm
Procedure 10
Confirm misting of medication
Procedure 11
Place the patient into the fowlers position and have them self administer the medication
Procedure 12
If the patient is unable to hold the nebulizer consider attaching a NRB
