Indications 1
Moderate to severe respiratory distress involving COPD, Bronchospasm (IE Asthma)
Indications 2
Breathing is so rapid that it affects overall minute volume
Contraindications
Patients in Cardiac Arrest
Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
Confirm protocol, (or orders for medication), and the 6 rights of medication administration (PMRDTD)
Procedure 3
Inspect the medication packaging sterility, date, color, clarity as applicable
Procedure 4 BVM
Oxygen must be connected to Nebulizer at 6 lpm
Procedure 5 BVM
Attach BVM to an Oxygen source at 15 lpm
Procedure 6 BVM
The nebulizer should be attached to the T PIECE and placed between the BVM and the face mask
Procedure 7 BVM
Monitor the patients respiratory status, including rate and accessory muscle use.
Procedure 8 BVM
Deliver ventilations in sync with the patients respirations ( squeeze bag w/ inspiration and relax bag during exhalation) The patient should never be ventilated during the exhalation phase of respirations.
Procedure 9 BVM
Monitor patient and document (DART) and patient response
Contraindications CPAP 1
Patients unable to protect their own airway
Contraindications CPAP 2
Patients who are unresponsive and cannot follow verbal commands
Contraindications CPAP 3
Hypotension (systolic or 90 mmhg or less)
Contraindications CPAP 4
Signs and symptoms of chest trauma or pneumothorax
Procedure CPAP 1
Oxygen must be connected to nebulizer at 6 lpm
Procedure CPAP 2
Attach CPAP to oxygen and make sure O2 is flowing, and properly attach PEEP valve (set at 10 cm h2o for Pulmonary Edema and 5 cm h2o for bronchospasm)

Make sure the patient is in upright fowlers position and is conscious

The nebulizer should be attached to the T-PIECE between the peep valve and CPAP face mask at the blue adapter
Procedure CPAP 5
CPAP should then be applied to the patients face using the two person technique
Procedure CPAP 6
After the mask has been fitted, reassess for proper seal
Procedure CPAP 7
Monitor the patient for respiratory status and accessory muscle use
Procedure CPAP 8
Monitor patient and document DART and patient response
