CPAP Flashcards
Indications
Moderate to severe respiratory distress involving pulmonary edema or bronchospasm
Indications 2
Breathing rate is so rapid that it affects overall minute volume
Contraindication 1
Patient that cannot protect their own airway
Contraindications 2
Patient is unresponsive and cannot follow verbal commands
Contraindications 3
Hypotension (systolic less than 90mmhg)
Contraindications 4
Signs and symptoms associated with chest trauma or a pneumothorax
Procedure 1
Standard precautions
Procedure 2
Prepare and check equipment (air filter, supply tubing, fittings)
Procedure 3
Have a full “spare” O2 tank and regulator at the patients side
Procedure 4
Explain the procedure to the patient and apply “verbal sedation” techniques
Procedure 5
Ensure patient is conscious and place in the high fowlers position
Procedure 6
Attach CPAP to O2 source and make sure O2 is flowing, and properly set peep valve ( 10cm H2O for pulmonary edema or 5 cm for bronchospasm)
Procedure 7
Ensure the PEEP valve is properly attached to the facemask prior to placing on patient. To apply facemask to patient; One rescuer will hold the CPAP mask on the patients face while second rescuer secures and adjust facemask straps
Procedure 8
After fitting the mask reassess for proper seal
Procedure 9
Reassess the patients respiratory status in response to the intervention
