Democratic leadership style
- group members are encouraged to share
- ideas/opinions
- get to vote
- works best in mature and self-directed groups
Autocratic leadership style
Authoritarian - total authority and decision making
Permissive or Laissez-Faire leadership
- BAD
- hands off style - no mentorship
- sets up for failure (least productive)
When is the best time to use the autocratic leadership style?
- in crisis
- when conditions are dangerous
- military - example
Bureaucratic leadership
- “by the book” leadership
- everything is done by policy and procedure
- Good when something is dangerous (pyxis machine)
Charismatic leadership
- Powerful personalities (touch on emotional levels)
- Inspire emotional connections
- Hilter - charismatic but wrong
- Recognize that the whole is greater than the sum of parts
Shared leadership
- Empowerment of others
- Recognizing the importance of formal and informal
- Shared governance - not micromanaging, share!
Servant Leadership
puts other people and their needs above their own; choose to lead by serving others
Transactional Leadership
- Social exchange theory- gold star for the week
- atmosphere of trust and self-actualization
- Composed of inspirational motivation (cast a vision)
- Intellectual stimulation (encourage sharing ideas)
- Idealize influence (high ethical standards, I got your back, being a servant)
- THE BEST KIND OF LEADERSHIP
Trait Theory of Leadership
- focuses on individual characteristics of a leader (Drive, motivation, etc)
- Predicts likelihood of success/failure
- Subjective and objective
Great Man Theory of Leadership
- BAD
- “Great leaders are born and not made”
- Primarily male
Contingency Theory of Leadership
- Focus on variables that might determine which style of leadership is best
- “pick the style that fits the moment”
- Negatives: can be difficult to change styles
Situational Theory of Leadership
- Good - transformational leader (many hats; harder to find this leader)
- Different from contingency as this focuses more on the behaviors that the leader should adopt
- Often based on follower behavior
- Effective leaders are those that can change their style based on situations
Behavioral Theory of Leadership
- Belief that leaders are made not, born
- Focuses on actions of leaders, not on mental quality
Participative Theory of Leadership
- Democratic
- Encourages participation from others but leader still are present
Management Theory of Leadership
- Less desired theory
- AKA transactional theory (carrot and sticks)
Relationship Theory of Leadership
- MOST desired theory
- AKA transformational
- focuses on connections btwn leaders and followers
- Focuses on performance of group

all positives - inspiration ; motivation; encourages collaboration
