Taft-Hartley Amendment
Permitted presidential intervention to appoint board; POUS can overturn strike if threatens health or safety
Wagner Act :NLRA
Allows employees to form unions to bargin
extension of the NLRA
requires unions to give a 10 day notice of intent prior to strike
Rules for becoming a Union Shop
own your own time not interfering with work, in a public place, employees show interest and sign authorization cards (30%)
Management actions during union organization
Can: point out facts, compare wages and benefits with other union hospitals
Cannot: have 1to1 discussions regarding feelings or votes; terminate those who may be union leaders
Union Elections
50% + 1 vote wins OF THE PEOPLE VOTING
if they loose, off limits for 12 mo
if wins, next step is contract
Collective Bargaining Agreement Act
agreement negotiated between employer and union, terms of employment, may include: breaks, RN to PT ratio, working conditions
Contract
voluntary act that defines responsibilities and liabilities; includes grievances (c/o not living up to their contract)
Arbitration
“we agree to abide by a third party since we cannot come to agreement”
