@nd glossary Flashcards
Exocoelomic cavity
Secondary yolk sac
Formed when extra embryonic mesoderm pinches of an area of the yolk sac and forms the secondary yolk sac
Fluid resuscitation
May also, be known as “fluid replacement” and is a medical practice of replenishing bodily fluid lost through sweating, bleeding, fluid shifts, or other pathologic processes. Ultrasound may be used to diagnose the need for fluid resuscitation, monitor the patient’s responsiveness to treatment, and determine if the patient is ready to go home or needs more surveillance.
Patency
In medical terms, the quality or state of being open or unobstructed. It is the degree of openness of a tube, such as a blood vessel or catheter; the relative absence of blockage. Measured in percent.
Rigors
Shivering or chills occur while your body temperature is rising. Rigors is triggered by the presence of chemicals called pyrogens in the blood which ‘turn up’ the body’s thermostat setting, telling the body to aim for a higher target temperature. Fever and chills can become quite severe
Sepsis
Sepsis is the body’s extreme and life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. This is because the chemicals that fight off infection are out of balance, triggering changes that damage the body’s systems. Once sepsis progresses to septic shock, blood pressure drops drastically, which may lead to death.
Anyone can develop sepsis, but those at higher risk are: people over 65 yrs of age, immunocompromised individuals, and children younger than one.
Most common causes of sepsis are pneumonia, abdominal infection, kidney infection and blood stream infection
Tenaculum
A tenaculum is a surgical instrument, usually classified as a type of forceps. It consists of a slender sharp-pointed hook attached to a handle and is used mainly in surgery for seizing and holding parts, such as blood vessels.
In most procedures involving uterine instrumentation, a tenaculum is used for stabilization and traction of the cervix and to decrease the flexion of the uterus to ease the passage of instruments into the endometrial cavity.
Toxoplasmosis
Infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma that invades the tissues and may seriously damage the CNS, especially of infants.
Infection usually occurs by eating undercooked contaminated meat, exposure from infected cat feces, or mother to child transmission during pregnancy.
