what is the EXTERNAL section, and what other characterisations fall under it?
looks at characters’ PHYSICALITY, appearance and vocal tributes of character through non-verbal communication.
= posture, gesture, facial expressions, appearance, voice.
what is the INTERNAL section, and what other characterisations fall under it?
characters PERSONALITY, what they think, feel, believe. Through their personal history and motivations. WHAT FUELS THEM, pushes and pulls them.
= social backrounds, class, education, relationships, career, goals, ambitions.
what does a actor express when it is not verbal?
they create their character through posture and gesture.
what falls under voice?
pace, volume, pitch, articulation, pronunciation, and fluency.
style
the way in which the play is presented to the audience. on page and on stage. (realism, physical theatre, elizabethan theatre)
genre
refers to what kind of story (narrative) the play is telling. (comedy, tragedy, satire)
plot
refers to events of play, and the action.
influences
influences on playwright can effect THEMES AND INTENTION. (socio political events)
socio political context
what was happening during that time, and place that the play was written in.
themes
ideas explored by playwright in the play. (love, truth, betrayal)
symbols
visual/aural representations of themes. Can be seen in props, sound, music, lighting, motifs repeated in dialogue of characters.
structure
way the play is put together (built).

exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution/denument, end(open or closed)
give the structure of conflict in a play

setting
time and place of the events of play.
given circumstances
who, what, when, where, why, how
set
large items on stage to represent setting. (backdrops, furniture)
performance space
type of stage used for performance, type of stage to suit performance of play. (thrust stage, theatre in the round)
props
smaller items to dress set, used by characters. prop = tool to express characters subtext. personal prop is connected to character.
relevance and desired audience responce
linked to playwrights intention, and socio political context of performance. learn a moral lesson.
