What were the Nazi’s economic aims?
To reduce unemployment, to be self-sufficient, and to rearm in preparation for war.
What was Schacht’s New Plan?
From 1934-36, new motorways and buildings provided work, increased trading with other countries, encouraged women to leave work for loans.
Why was the Nazi’s economic control successful?
Unemployment fell as women and Jews weren’t included in the figures, conscription was introduced, and men had to join the National Labour Service where they worked on public works for low pay.
Who was in charge of the economy?
In 1936, Hitler placed Hermann Goering in charge.
What was Goering’s Four Year Plan?
Aimed to prepare Germany for war, increased rearmament from 3.5 billion to 26 billion in 1939.
What was a weakness of Nazi economic policy?
The economy didn’t become self-sufficient, 1/3 of raw materials were still imported in 1939.
What was the German Labour Front?
Led by Robert Ley, increased worker’s hours while keeping pay low.
What was Strength through Joy?
Provided leisure activities such as cruises, day trips, the theatre. Also, encouraged workers to pay weekly to save up for a car - 150000 paid but none received a car as factories switched to war production.
What were the Three Ks?
Children, kitchen, and church - these were what women were expected to focus on.
How were women influenced to have children?
Some were paid, medals were given for those with large numbers of kids, and Lebensborn encouraged unmarried women to have children with SS men to make Aryan babies.
How were women expected to be?
Larger (to better bear children), Aryan, no makeup, no smoking, dress modestly, wear plaits.
What was the aim of schools?
To indoctrinate children from a young age.
How were Nazi ideals ensured in schools?
Anti-Nazi teachers were sacked, lies were taught as facts, history taught the Aryan past, biology taught fake racial superiority, girls were taught domestic skills.
What was Hitler Youth?
Young boys, dressed in brown uniforms, were taught military skills such as shooting, orientation, athletics etc.
What was the League of German Maidens?
Young girls received physical training and learned domestic skills like sewing and cooking, the goal was to prepare them for marriage and motherhood.
