Hitler’s Foreign Policy Flashcards
What were Hitler’s three aims outlined in his book?
Reverse the Treaty or Versailles, Lebensraum (living space, he wanted to expand into Eastern Europe), and to unite all German speakers into one Reich.
What was the Disarmament Conference?
In 1932, countries discussed how to prevent war. However, this failed due to France and Germany’s differences and Hitler pulled out of the conference as he wanted to rearm Germany.
How was Germany’s army built up?
Hitler set up the Air Ministry to train pilots and build aircrafts, the army, navy, and airforce when built up. He announced his rearmament goals in 1935.
When was conscription introduced and how many signed up?
1935, the army increased from 100000 to 1400000 from 1933 to 1939.
What was the Stresa Front?
In April 1935, France, Britain, and Italy met to try and stop German rearmament.
Why did the Stresa Front fail?
The Anglo-German Naval Treaty in 1935 meant Germany had a fleet 35% the size of Britain’s, and Italy’s invasion of Abyssinia ruined co-operation between the countries.

In 1938, Hitler encouraged Nazis in Austria to protest, and even sent in troops. Nearly 100% of Austrians voted to join Germany (but this was rigged). European countries protested this.
What was the Sudetenland Crisis?
In 1938, an area of Czechoslovakia was given to Germany after the Sudetenland Nazis caused trouble - Hitler supported this.
How did Germany takeover Czechoslovakia?
In 1939, Hitler pressured the Czech leader, saying he was trying to restore order.
What was the invasion of Poland?
In September 1939, Hitler invaded Poland to retrieve what was taken in the Treaty of Versailles. USSR invaded from the East.
What was the Non-Aggression Pact?
In 1934, Hitler promised to accept the borders of Poland and trade.
