Navigation Flashcards
Better not get lost!!
Which of the following reguires aircraft equipment?
Primary surveillance radar or secondary surveillance radar?
Secondary surveillance radar
Define: Pilotage
navigation by referance only to landmarks
Define: heading
The direction in which the longitudinal axis of an aircraft is pointing, usually expressed in degrees from north.
Define: Victor Airways
networks of VHF airways whick make use of omnirange facilities
- they are flown with refrence to the omnistations, which are located 100 miles apart
- Victor airways aare numbered like highways
Define: Rhumb lines
-a curved line on the surface of the earth, cutting all meridians it meets at the same angle
Define: Great circle
-a circle on the surface of a sphere whose plane passes through the centre of the sphere and which therefore cuts the sphere into equal parts
Define: contour lines
-are drawn on a chart joining points of equal elevation above mean sea level
Define: Dead reckoning
-navigation by use of predetermined vectors of wind and true airspeed and precalculated heading, groundspeeds, and ETA
Define: MEF-maximum elecation figure
-indicates the highest terrian elevation, or the highest known obstruction whichever is higher
Define OCC- obstacle clearance circle
gives the highest obstacle in that quadrant above sea level plus 500’
Define: Track
-the progection on the earths surface of the path of an aircraft, the direction of which at any point is usually expressed in degreeas from north.
Define: Hypsometric tint
charts are coloured to represent different levels of elevation. On every chart an elevation legend is printed to show what colours are used for different elevations

what do the following acronyms stand for?
ILS
DME
RMI
ILS- instrument landing system
DME- distance measuring equipment
RMI0Radion magnetic indicator
Define: compass deviation
- angle through which the compass needle is deflected from the magnetic meridian
- when magnets mounted in simple direct reading compasses are installed in aircraft they do not point directly to magnetic north, but due to influence of magnetic feilds associated with aircraft metal components, are deflected to compass north
Define: Variation lines
- the magnetic meridians do not coincide with true meridians because the north magnetic pole does not coincide with the geographical pole
- the angle between the true meridian and the magnetic meridian in which the compass needle lies is called magnetic variation
