Navigating the Roads Flashcards
What is a traffic lane?
- section of road for a single line of traffic
- there are different kinds of traffic lanes
What are lane markings?
- help drivers know which part of the road to use and understand traffic rules
- line colors and patterns mean different things
What does a single solid yellow line indicate?
marks the center of a road with two-way traffic.
What can you not do when there is a single solid yellow line indicate?
- Do not cross over this line into oncoming traffic.
- Do not pass a vehicle in front of you if there is only one lane of traffic going your direction and a solid yellow line on your side of the road.
What do two sets of double yellow lines indicate?
- considered a barrier
- you cannot drive over this barrier
Can you pass over double solid yellow lines?
- No
What are some exceptions for passing over double solid yellow lines?
You can cross over double solid lines you are:
- In a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane that has a designated entrance on the left.
• Instructed by construction drive on the other side of the road because your side of the road is closed or blocked.
• Turning left across a single set of double yellow lines to enter or exit a driveway or private road or make a U-turn.
What does a broken yellow line indicate?
- you may pass if the broken line is next to your driving lane
- only pass when it is safe
What does a single solid white line indicate?
- marks traffic lanes going in the same direction, including one way streets
What do double solid white lines indicate?
- indicate a lane barrier between a regular use and preferential use lane (such as a carpool lane)
- never change lanes over double solid white lines, wait until you see a single broken white line
What does a broken white line indicate
- separate traffic lanes on roads with two or more lanes in the same direction
What does the end of lane markings indicate?
- ending freeway and street lanes are usually marked with large broken lines
- be prepared to exit freeway or for lane to end
What do yield lines look like? What do they mean?
- yield lines are solid white line triangles that shows approaching vehicles where to stop
- triangles point towards approaching vehicles.
Number the traffic lanes by number
- the left (or fast lane) is lane number 1
- the lane to the right of lane number 1 is lane number 2
- the lane right to lane number 2 is lane number 3
Use the ___ lane to pass or turn left
- left lane
Use the ___ lane to enter or exit traffic
- right
What should you do before changing lanes?
- signal
- look in all mirrors
- check traffic behind you
check your blind spots - make sure there is enough room for your vehicle in the next lane
What is the passing lane?
- it is the closest to the center divider and is used to pass other vehicles
- also known as the fast lane
What is an HOV lane?
- HOV stands for high occupancy vehicle
- this lane is reserved for carpools, buses motorcycles, or low emission vehicles with decals
When can you use an HOV lane?
- when you have a certain number of people in your vehicle (indicated by signs)
- you are driving a low emission or zero emission vehicle
- you are driving a motorcycle
What are center left turn lanes?
- a center left turn lane is located in the middle of a two way street.
- the inner line is broken and the outer line is solid
How do you use the Center Left Turn Lanes?
- use the center left turn lane to prepare for and make a left turn or u-turn. it is not a regular traffic lane or a passing lane
you may only drive for ___ feet in the center left turn lane
- 200 feet
To turn left from the center left turn lane you…
- look for other vehicles coming outward you in the center left turn lane
- signal
- look over your shoulder to check your blind spot
- merge completely into the center left turn lane so you don’t block traffic
- turn when it is safe
What are turnout areas or lanes?
- marked lanes that you can merge into to allow cars behind you to pass
You must use a turnout are or lane to let other vehicles pass you when you are driving ___ on a two -lane road where passing is ___
- slowly
- unsafe
What are bicycle lanes for?
- for bicyclists only and run alonfisde vehicle traffic
What are bicycle lanes marked by?
- solid single white line and signs
- they are sometimes painted bright green to make them easier to see
- the solid line will change to dashed near an intersection
Explain: Bike Lane
- established along streets adjacent to vehicle traffic
- typically defined by a single solid white line that turns into a dashed line near an intersection
Explain: Buffered Bike Lane
- uses chevrons or diagonal marks to create “buffer” between traffic and on-street parking
Explain: Bike route
- uses bike routes signs and/or shared road markings to designate a preferred route for bicyclists on streets shared with vehicle traffic
Explain: Bicycle boulevard
- prioritizes bicycle travel on streets shared with vehicle traffic
Explain: Separated Bikeway
- (AKA cycle track or bike lane)
- for exclusive use of bicyclists
- physically separated from vehicle traffic
Explain: Roadway Bicycle Markings (sharrows)
- alert traffic that bicyclists can occupy the lane
It is illegal to drive in the bicyclist lane unless you are:
- parking
- entering/leaving the road
- turning (within 200 feet of the intersection)
Explain how to make a right turn
- drive close to the right edge of the road
- watch for pedestrians/bikes/
- begin signaling 100 feet before turn
- look over right shoulder and reduce speed
- stop behind the limit lines/crosswalk
- look both ways
turn
Explain how to run onto a road with a dedicated lane
- doesn’t merge into turning lane (is turning lane)
- lets you take a “free right turn”
- you may turn even if there is a red light, but you must obey a traffic light/sign
Explain how to take a left turn
- drive close to the center divider or into the left turn lane
- start signaling 100 ft before the turn
- look over your left shoulder and reduce speed
- stop behind the limit line or crosswalk (if there is no limit line)
- look left, right, and then left again
- make the turn when safe
You may one turn left against a red light when you are ___
are turning from a one-way street onto a left moving one way street
You may make a legal U-turn:
- across a double yellow line
- in a residential district:
- — if no vehicles are approaching you within 200 feet
- —- whenever a traffic sign, light or traffic light protects you from approaching
- at an intersection on a green traffic light or green arrow
- on a divided highway
Never make a U-turn:
- at a railroad crossing
- on a divided highway by crossing a dividing section. curb, strip of land or two sets of double yellow lines
- when you cannot see clearly for 200 feet in each direction
- in front of a fire station
- in business districts
Explain: Left turn from a two-way street
- go to the left lane closest to the middle of the street
- end the turn in the left lane closest to the middle of the street
Explain: Right turn
- begin and end the turn in the and closest to the edge of the road
- don’t wide turn
Explain: Left turn from a two way street onto a one way street
- start the turn from the lane closest to the middle
you may end your turn in any of the one way lanes
Explain: Left turn from a one-way street onto a two-lane street
- start the turn from the far-left lane
- end the turn in the left lane closest to the middle of the street going in your vehicle’s direction of travel
When you enter a highway. you will need to:
- enter at or near the speed of traffic
- merge into highway traffic when safe to do so- so not stop unless absolutely necesary
When you enter a highway. you will need to leave ____ seconds of space between you and the vehicle ahead of you
- 3 seconds
How much space do you need to merge/enter/exit traffic?
- half a block on city streets
- a full block on the highway
Before you pass, you need to look ahead for road conditions. Do not pass when:
- you’re approaching a hill/curve

Explain Parallel Parking- Step 2: Pull Up Alongside the vehicle in front of the space you are parking in
leave about two feet between your vehicle and the vehicle next to you. stop once your rear bumper is aligned with the front of your parking space, keep your signal on
Explain Parallel Parking- Step 3:Check your rearview mirror
- look over your shoulder for approaching vehicles keep your foot on the brake and put the vehicle in reverse
Explain Parallel Parking- Step 4: Begin Backing Up
turn your wheel to back into the space at about 45 degree angle
Explain Parallel Parking- Step 5: straighten out
begin turning the steering wheel away from the curb when your rear wheel is within 18 inches of the curb
Explain Parallel Parking- Step 6: Center your vehicle in the parking space
turn off your vehicle and set the parking brake
