Nav standards Flashcards
What is shearwaters navigatinal draft?
12feet
what is the cutter’s mean draft under full load?
6 feet, to provide safety we go with a total of 12ft.
what is the transducer set at?
1.2 feet above the keel, which results in a -1.2 feet
In ECDIS, what is the safety depth contour set at?
17.5 feet to shade the 18ft contour line which is the safety depth for shearwater.
During special sea detail and mooring stations, what is the cutters restricted distance to be set at?
1000 yards from entering restricted waters, not normally set during coastal waters.
Drag circle is managed by?
length of line and from hawespipe to GPS antenna
Swing circle is managed by?
length of line, plus length of vessel
During RMD, the engineer can secure what?
one MDE and both generators leaving one MDE to steer.
Principle Navigation Routes. are routes that are only?
approved by the OIC, any temp routes must be approved by OIC before we can follow the course.
Can routes be deleted by OOD?
NO, only OIC can approve deleted routes. Plus you need the password to delete.
at 10 kts, how long will it take to stop the 87?
23 seconds
at 25 kts, how long will it take to stop the 87?
31 seconds
what is advance?
distance traveled in the original direction when a turn of 90 degrees is completed
what is transfer?
distance traveled perpendicular to the original track when a turn of 90 degrees is completed
what is an U/W OOD?
safety of crew
safe navigation of the cutter execution of missions in accordance with current directives, standing orders, and operational tasking.
safety observor?
overall big picture and speaks to the OOD if unsafe conditions evolve.
Navigation Evaluator will be implemented?
when navigating in restricted waters and manually operating the boat.
What are the three navigation modes?
automated plotting
manual plotting
Seamans eye- which is extensive knowledge of the vessels aids to navigation, terrestrial landmarks and depth contours.
what is navigational zones defined?
different types of waters that the SHEARWATER transits.
what are the nav zones that SHEARWATER transits and the fix intervals?
Restricted waters = 1000 yds or less from shoal water and 3min fixes
Coastal waters = 1000-3nm and 15 min fixes
Open ocean= 3NM and beyond and 30 min fixes.
What AOR’s are restricted from operating?
Cape may canal and will not transit with water lower than mid tide, with special sea detail manned and anchor ready for letting go.
What are some other ways to verify your fix to avoid over reliance?
secondary positioning source soundings visual observation danger ranges/bearings set and drift relative position of aton
If position ambiguity exists, all appropriate team members must be verbally informed and
another fix taken immediately to ascertain the vessel’s position
What is the max deviation from XTE for restricted waters?
Coastal?
open ocean?
200 yards
500 yards
1000 yards
what are your precautions for operating in high risk areas?
a. reduce speed
b. take all way off
c. increase fix interval
d. turn away from danger
What is Voyage planning?
encompasses the development of long and short-term plans as well as contingency plans for a mission.
What are some considerations when building a track or course to transit on ECDIS?
- Impact of NTM/LNTM
- updated charts within 45 days.
- Max XTE on each leg according to the zone.
- OIC approved track lines and waypoints.
- Corrected charts according to the navigational zone.
when do you prepare nav briefs?
entering port, restricted waters, small boat launch
How often should the fluxgate be calibrated?
semi annually, and cutter boat should have deviation table and updated annually.
what is your primary source of navigation?
ECDIS, along with position verification done at least once a day in open ocean and noted in the smooth log.
Shoal water is indicated in what color?
blue
can you use personal GPS to navigate?
negative
What is our chart hierarchy?
- ENC/ IENC
- NGA/DNC
- RNC
- Commercial vector chart
- Commercial raster chart
Safety depth means that?
safety contour will be set at 18ft and shallow contour will be set at 12 feet.
Safety contour warnings will be set at?
3 minute warnings and sounder depth enabled on the checklist at 12ft.
Input failurs will be verified in this order?
DGPS 1, then DGPS 2 and then DR. Input failures will trigger an alarm.
RD 30 alarm is set at?
6ft of water beneath the keel.
Anchor settings will be programed as following for the swing circle?
length of vessel
length of line
+50 added for depth of water in order to accurately input the GPS receiver.
Radar is set to North up in relative motion reading the gyro and course over ground from
heading sensor input.
Radar is set at 6NM and SINS will be set at 3NM.
AIS is used to ?
identify vessels through the name and GPS data over a VHF-FM band.
AIS will transmit in secured TX with the exception of ?
OIC discretion
restricted visibility
SAR
restricted waters
What will you as the OOD do for ECDIS OR DGPS failure?
- Assess the traffic and navigational picture.
- Compare the both DGPS settings.
- shift to NODE II
- Shift to manual mode.
What will you do for Loss of Gyrocompass?
- slow your speed and notify OIC.
- if in autopilot switch to manual steering.
- mark your position
- switch radar to heads up
- steer magnetic compass using fluxgate compass.
Which Coast Pilots do we use for our AOR?
we use 2,3, and 4.
At anchor paper plotting is done every?
30 min.
ECDIS will automatically plate set and drift, when in Manual plotting fix is done over 3 min= under 3min =?
over 3 min done every fix
Under 3 min every other fix
How will you determine set manually?
Parallel plotter on either a meridian or compass rose and drift will be calculated using either 60 d/ sxt or nautical slide rule.
What are the small boat restrictions for waves, swells, wind and nav draft?
6ft waves
6 ft swells
25 kt winds
6ft draft
during abnormal conditions the small boat will not launch during ?
restricted visibility and ops and pos every 15 min
When to notify me?
