Provides mechanical power to the shafts and propellers through the reduction gear to move the ship through the water.

How do the MDE operate
Through a combustion of diesel fuel and air to create mechanical energy
Where are the emergency fuel cut off valves?
Fuel supply shall be cut off from the cables located in the vestibule.
FO system fuel filter vacuum shall not exceed 10inches
If it does reach 10” or more it’s a clogged filter and require a backflush or replaced.
Major 3 causes of LO system CCM ?
Major lube oil leak
Noice or vibration in the MDE
Loss of lube oil pressure
LO pressure
LO temp
LO level
Parameters
LO pressure is between 1.5-5.8 barometric pressure
LO temp 95-105 degrees Celsius
LO level between high and low marks on dip stick
What does the engine cooling system do to the MDE and JW?
Provides 26.5 gallons of distilled water and G93 corrosion to inhibit engine cooling
De icer?
Provides heated raw water to the sea strainer
Anti fouling system
Prevents marine growth on the MDE RW strainers and associates manifolds and piping.
JW Heatwr heats ?
The MDE coolant to a predetermining temp while secured in order to facilitate ease of starting and reduces warm up time.
Switch is outboard each MDE
Where are the emergency stops for MDE?
2 on bridge

- Engine room ventilation consists of supply blower on stbd side and exhaust blower on port side. Each has and automatic shutdown switch
