Nature Of Science 8/27/15 Flashcards
Process of gathering info about events or processes; uses the “senses”
Observations
What deliberately gets changes
Independent variable
What gets changed as a result of the independent variable
Dependent variable
Data that can be measured and written down in numbers
Quantitative
Data that is descriptions/observations but not numbers
Qualitative
Characteristics of Life? Living things are…
Made up of cells Reproduce Based on an universal genetic code Grow and develop Obtain and use materials and energy Respond to their environment Maintain stable internal environment Change over time (as a group)
Used for comparison and does not receive any treatments
Control Group
Proposed scientific explanation for a set of observations (educated guess)
Hypothesis
A well tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations
Theory
Decimal system of measurement whose units are based on a certain physical standards and are scaled on multiples of 10
Metric System
Group where something is deliberately changed
Experimental group
Steps for scientific method:
a) state the question/problem
b) research (background info)
c) make a hypothesis
d) design the experiment
e) collect data
f) analyze data (graphs)
g) draw a conclusion
Find the control group in an experiment (what is a control group?)
Group where factors aren’t changed
Qualitative vs Quantitative?
Qualitative = data that is descriptions/observations without numbers
Quantitative= data measured in numbers
Basic units of weight, volume, and length
Grams
Liters
Meters
