Natural gas and crude oil Flashcards
What are non-renewable sources of energy?
natural gas, mainly methane and crude oil (petroleum)
What is petroleum gas for?
fuel for cooking and heating
What is petrol (gasoline) for?
Fuel for cars
What is naphtha for?
feedstock for petrochemical industry
What is kerosene (paraffin) for?
fuel for heating/cooking and fuel for aircrafts
What is diesel oil for?
fuel for diesel engines in lorries/buses/trains
What is lubricating oil for?
lubricating machines making waxes/polishes
What is bitumen for?
paving road surfaces
What is collected at the upper sections of the fractional columns for crude oil?
Smaller hydrocarbon molecules as they have lower boiling points.
What is collected at the lower sections of the fractional columns for crude oil?
Larger hydrocarbon molecules as they have higher boiling points.
What is an alternative source of energy?
Biofuels as they are renewable
What is bioethanol?
Ethanol produced from plants such as sugarcane and corn
Why is using bioethanol more sustainable as compared to the use of fossil fuels?
As sugarcane grows, it absorbs CO2 during photosynthesis. Hence offsets CO2 produced when bioethanol is produced as fuel.
What is crude oil?
It is a mixture of hydrocarbons that can be separated into its useful fractions by fractional distillation.
