Experimental chemistry Flashcards
what is a pipette used to measure?
fixed or exact volume of liquid up to 1d.p.
what is a burette used to measure?
most accurate volume of liquid up to 2d.p.
what is a gas syringe used to measure?
volume of gas in various sizes
what is a beaker used to measure?
estimation of volume of liquid
what instrument do you use to measure exact volume of liquid?
pipette
what instrument do you use to measure the volume of gas?
gas syringe
what instrument is used to measure the estimation of the volume of liquid?
beaker/measuring cylinder
which instrument is used to measure the most accurate volume of liquid?
burette
What is the purpose of the condenser used in simple and fractional distillation?
To provide a cool surface for the vapour to condense back to liquid and get collected as distillate
Why is water in the condenser pumped in from the bottom of the condenser and exit from the top?
This ensures that the condenser is completely filled and there is a maximum surface area for cooling. This increases the efficiency of condensation.
What are the fractional columns for in fractional distillation?
It is used to help improve the separation between 2 or more miscible liquids
Why should the starting line of a chromatogram be drawn in pencil?
So that the ink of the pen will not dissolve in the solvent
