Natural factors Flashcards
Define the term natural disaster
A natural disaster is…
A major event caused by natural processes of the earth.
They cause great damage and potentially loss of life
Identify three natural disasters that can happen at a destination
Categories of natural disasters….
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, sink holes and avalanches
Identify three severe weather events that can happen at a destination
Categories of severe weather events…
Flooding, drought, fires, landslides, hurricanes/cyclones, tornadoes, blizzards/snow storms
Define the term infrastructure
Infrastructure is…
The structures and facilities, (such as roads, buildings and power supplies), a tourist destination needs to function properly
Identify two short term impacts of natural disasters/severe weather events
Short term impacts of natural disasters/severe weather events…
- threat to life
- damage to buildings
- evacuation
-no communication
-travel alert
-airports closed
Identify two long term impacts of natural disaster/severe weather events
long term impacts of natural disaster/severe weather events…
- rebuilding of building and infrastructure
- insurance costs
- cancelled holidays
- reputation of area
- unemployment
Describe two ways that flooding (severe weather event) can impact a tourism destination
- Flooding can damage infrastructure such as road, railways and power lines. Damaged roads and railways can make it more difficult for tourists to travel around a destination
- Flooding could also impact hotels and other businesses meaning hotels would have to shut temporarily and suffer a loss of income
Describe two ways that wild fires (severe weather event) can impact a tourism destination
- Wild fires can kill people and cause damage to National Parks. This will have a short term impact as fewer people will want to visit while the wildfires are burning.
- Air transport would be disrupted because of the smoke which could close airports
Identify two ways countries are trying to protect people from natural disasters/severe weather events
- Early warning systems
- Building design
