What is Billig’s concept of ‘Banal Nationalism’

A

Notion that citizen are constantly exposed to nationalism without knowing it. Be it through the way news reports are framed or following sports teams. Impossible to find alternative of to the nation. Creates ‘othering’.

A

France and England it developed with the nation state. German it was pioneered by romantics along cultural lines. Relevant because it shows certain models apply to nationalism in certain contexts.
