Define “aircraft accident”
An aircraft accident means an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons have disembarked, and in which any person suffers death or serious injury, or in which the aircraft received substantial damage. REQUIRED to submit report
Define “aircraft incident”
An aircraft incident means an occurrence other than an accident associated with the operation of an aircraft, which affects or could affect the safety of operations.
Define the term “serious injury”
a) requires hospitalization for more than 48 hours commencing w/n 7 days from the when the date of injury occurred.
b) results in a fracture of any bone
c) causes severe hemorrhages, nerve, muscle, or tendon damage
d) involves any internal organs
e) involves second, third degree burns affecting more than 5% of the body
Define the term “substantial damage”
Substantial damage means damage or failure which adversely affects the structural strength, performance or flight characteristics of the aircraft and which would normally require major repair or replacement of the affected component. Engine failure, dented skin, punctured holes, prop, landing gear, wheels, tires, brakes, etc.
Where are accident/incident reports filed?
With the nearest NTSB field office nearest to the accident.
After an accident/incident has occured, how soon must a report be filed with the NTSB?
The operator shall file a report on NTSB form 6120.1/2 available from NTSB field offices, the NTSB in D.C of the FAA Flight Standards District Office:
a) Within 10 days of the accident
b) When, after 7 days, an overdue aircraft is still missing
