4 - King - Airspace and Weather Minimums Flashcards
Class Alpha airspace is?
A is for Altitude
Above 18,000 MSL and including 60,000 feet.
including the airspace overlying the waters within 12 nautical miles of the coast
Must be operated under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR).
Enroute airspace for jets and turboprop aircraft.
Class Bravo airspace is?
B is for Big or Busiest
2 or more layers of upside-down layered cake.
Towered airports with ATC
SFC (surface) to 10,000 (MSL)
ATC clearance is required for all aircraft.
Must have operable two-way radio to communicate with ATC.
The cloud clearance requirement for VFR operations is “clear of clouds”
Class Charlie airspace is?
C is for Crowded
Layered cake but it’s only two layers
Towered airports with ATC
SFC (surface) to 4,000 (MSL) with a 5NM radius
The second layer, called the shelf area, typically, is 10NM radius shelf area that extends no lower than 1,200 feet up to 4,000 feet above airport elevation.
Two-way radio communication must be established with ATC prior to entering the airspace which typically occurs in the outer area 20NM.
Class Delta airspace is?
D is for Dialogue
SFC (surface) to 2,500 above the airport elevation (charted in MSL) surrounding those airports that have an operational control tower.
No cake layered
Towered airports with ATC
Two-way radio communication must be established with ATC prior to entering the airspace.
Class Echo airspace is?
E is for Elsewhere
Controlled Air Space
Magenta Fuzzy Line on charts, Surface or 700’ AGL or 1’200 AGL
Blue Fuzzy Line on charts 1,200’ AGL to 18,000 AGL
Class Gulf airspace is?
Class G airspace surface to but not including 1,200’ AGL
VFR visibility and distance from clouds
Below 10,000 feet MSL Class Bravo, Charlie, Delta Flight Visibility 3 statute miles visibility 500 feet below 1000 feet above 2000 feet horizontally. Above 10,000 feet MSL Class Echo and Gulf Flight Visibility increases to 5 statute miles 1000 feet above 1000 feet below 1 mile horizontally.
