National Legislation for Protection (National Parks) Flashcards
1
Q
What is a national park?
A
-Ecologically rich area mostly unaltered by people with legal protection for it’s habitats and wildlife
2
Q
What are the limitations?
A
-The protection can be less effective if land is privately owned (Lake District)
-This is because environmentally damaging activities are still permitted e.g. grazing, hunting
-Commercial considerations are given priority over environment concerns, so most of the UK’s national parks have lost any conservation status they ever had
3
Q
Why is it successful?
A
-In the USA many national parks have full protection from human activity other than tourism, so are much better environmentally protected
