Glacial Erosional Landforms Flashcards
Corrie
Deep, hollow in mountainside
Formed by rotational slip of glacier causing abrasion and plucking. Exacerbated by basal slip due to gravity
Arete
Sharp ridge on side of mountain from corries eroding alongside eachother
Pyramidal Peak
3+ Corries eroding a mountainside back-to-back creates a sharp pyramid point
Truncated Spurs
Glacier erodes a series of interlocking spurs
Hanging Valley
Smaller valley hanging above main one due to smaller glacier travelling horizontally to bigger glacier and not eroding as far down
Ribbon Lakes
Areas of softer rock in valley floor eroded more deeply than other creating a hollow
Hollow is filled by meltwater during retreat leaving a long narrow lake in place
May be dammed by a moraine further trapping water and contributing to the formation of the lake
