Lake District Management Case Study Flashcards
How is it affected by climate change?
-Extreme weather events e.g. 2009 Cumbria floods
-Peat dries out, releases stored carbon
-Wildfires more likely when peat dry
Problems
-Traffic congestion = Air pollution = Bad health
-Trampling compacts soil = Surface runoff + soil erosion, flood risk increased
Management
-Limiting 2nd homes
-Low carbon lake district programme done by calculating emissions and working to reduce
-Preparing for climate change
National Park Protection
-Lake district is a national park
-However, as most of the land is privately owned, many environmentally damaging actions e.g. hunting are permitted
-So, although it has national park status, it’s not actually that effective in it’s protection and relies more on individual land owners and tourists to protect the environment
