Depositional Landforms Flashcards
(9 cards)
Drumlins
Streamlined mounds of till deposited by glacier varying in size
Formed wnen a glacier moves over an existing moraine and compacts it, then creates the lee slope as it advances/ retreats
Erratics
Singular, irregularly shaped boulders dropped by a melting glacier
Lateral moraine
Ridge of till along valley floor, built up at side of glacier
Medial moraine
Ridge of till down middle of valley formed when two glaciers come together
(Two lateral moraines of different glaciers coming together)
Terminal moraine
Shows furthest advance of glacier extending across valley floor
Features of moraine
Unconsolidated, angular, and unsorted sediment
Lowland depositional features
Till plain- An extensive flat plain of glacial till that forms when a sheet of ice becomes detached from the main body of a glacier and melts in place
Lodgement- Till becomes forced into bedrock at base of glacier
Ablation till- Unsorted, coarse material deposited as a glacier melts
How do drumlins show movement?
Drumlins are able to show direction of movement as the lee slope runs parallel with movement direction
How do moraines form?
When there is a steady supply of debris to the snout of the glacier, allowing the moraine to build and eventually be deposited
