National Electricity Grid Flashcards
What is The national Electricity Grid?
The national electricity grid is a network of interacting parts which provides electricity to all sectors of the economy
How does this process start?
It starts at the Power stations were electricity is generated, these power stations feed the electric current into large power lines called transmission lines,
Their is a massive network of transmission lines that extends throughout the country, transmission lines are supported by pylons
How do transmission lines prevent a waste of energy?
Electric current is sent through transmission lines at high voltages and low currents, however in out homes we need a low voltage but high current.
explain the use of a electrical transformer
when electricity reaches the substation to be distributes locally their is a step-down transformer which decreases voltage again but increases the current so their is a different relationship between the set up and set down transformer

What is a power surge, and what causes them.
A power surge is a sudden increase in the voltage somewhere in an electric circuit, this increase in current can damage weak or sensitive circuits. factors that can cause this involve faulty wiring or a lightning strike near a transmission can cause a power surge.
