f Flashcards
Whats wires provide the potential difference for the motor to move?
Live and neutral wires
Where does the earth wire come into this?
The thick earth wire is connected to a big metal spike
which leads to the ground the earth wire is only involved in situation of a short circuit, it prevents people from getting an electrical shock as the wire connects to the ground executing the short circuit movement.
What are short circuits
The electrical pathway has a very low resistance and the circuit produces a high amount of current, the increased current can damage appliances and the overheating effect can cause a fire, their are devices to prevent a short circuit
fuse
A fuse melts if the electrical current becomes too large due to a fault, so when the current overloads the fuse melts and breaks the current, fuses usually contain a limit before they melt
Circuit Breakers
Are the same as fuses except they can be reset.
if the electrical current that is passing through the breaker increases then the electro magnet becomes stronger, if the current increases to unsafe levels then the electromagnet gets strong enough to activate the iron catch destroying the current, their is a reset button that can be pressed.
Earth leakage
A earth leakage contains a circuit board, when the earth wire has been exposed, causing a short circuit then the electrical board instantly shuts of the electricity flow to the house .
Lightning spike
A pole that is connected to the house and a wire to the ground, if their is an electric strike to the pole then the current will flow to the ground disabling the current, this prevent short circuits and fires if the lighting were to strike the house
Wiring a 3 - pin plug
The electrical plug contains 3 metal pins
live neutral and earth wire which connects to the ground if any short circuit occurs it is distributed to the earth wire which connects to the ground
Illegal connections
Occurs when a person connects their wires to apower grid without a meter, this can cause multiple short circuits and lead to fires
