what supplies do you need for nasogastric tube insertion
nasogastric tube disposable irrigation set emesis basin water soluble lubricant tube guard suction set up Ice chips or water with straw
what size tubing is common for an adult
16 Fr
before inserting the tube what position should you put pt in, what should you assess and how do you measure tubing
place pt in high fowlers
assess nasal passages
place towel over chest
measure from tip of nose to earlobe to typhoid process
then attach irrigation syringe to the tube
how many inches of tubing should you lubricate for insertion
3-4 inches on end of tube
once tubing has passes nasal passage have the patient
flex head forward and begin swallowing
what does tilting the head forward help do
close the airway and facilitates placement of the tube in the esophagus
how many inches should you advance the tube
1-4 inches with swallowing
swallowing helps close what
the epiglottis and helps prevent entry of the tube into the trachea
when should you temporarily secure the tube to the nose
to aspirate for gastric contents
if patient is choking or coughing after tube is well advanced where could the tube be
possibly in the trachea
once confirming correct placement you secure tube with nose guard to ensure what
that there is no tension from the tube on the nare
after connecting suction to tube (if ordered) you will
secure the tube to the gowns
when having to irrigate the tube what steps do you have to follow
disconnect tube from suction
instill 30 mL of saline into NG tube
Resume suction
when removing tube what do you need to do
check orders position upright disconnect suction and free tube assess nasal passage for mucous plugging have pt hold breath gently remove tube provide nasal AND oral hygiene
