Blood Draws Flashcards
what are the 5 steps for blood draws from a SubClav, Jugular, or PICC CVAD
- verify orders or protocol
- gather supplies and prepare workspace
- follow universal competencies
- draw blood
- complete the job
what supplies are needed for a blood draw from a SubClav, jugular, or PICC CVAD
vacutainer or 10mL syringe vacationer blood tubes 2 saline flushes in 1 mL syringe swabcap needleless connector alcohol swabs patient labels for tubes
why would you never use anything smaller than a 10 mL syringe to flush or administer medications via a CVAD
because anything smaller than 10mL will require more pressure on the vein
when drawing blood and there is an intravenous infusion going what should you do
stop the infusion for atleast 1 minute before blood draw
what are the steps when drawing blood
perform HH and glove up
remove swab cap from port and allow to dry
purge air from profiled saline syringe and attatch to port
check blood return then flush with prefiled syringe (10mL)
aspirate 5mL of blood to discard
clean needless port and dry
attach NEW empty 10mL syringe or safety holder and obtain blood
failure to purge air from any syringe for intravenous use can result in
an air embolism
how do you prevent hemolysis
use distal port, allow blood to wash down the side of vacationer, aspirate sample slowly when using a syringe
when should you scrub access port
between every syringe attachment
after collecting the blood specimen what should you do to prevent infection
flush catheter with purged pre filled 10mL saline syringe
when flushing after a blood draw what should you do
use a pulsing technique
how many mLs should you flush a PICC line with
10 before blood draw 19mL after blood draw
after flushing the line what should you do with the needleless connector
prime new needleless connector with pre filled saline syringe and clamp the line so you you can replace the old one
before applying the NEW needless connector what should you do to the hub once the old one is off
scrub with alcohol for 15 seconds and let dry
what are the supplies needed for a peripheral vein blood draw
needle with safety device collection device (syringe, butterfly, vacuholder) vacutainer alcohol swabs tourniquet Cuban wrap cootonballs patient labels
