NASM -1 Flashcards
what does the Nervous system do
it is the communication network within the body
Peripheral nervous system subdivisions
somatic and autonomic
central nervous system
brain and spinal cord; coordinated activity ofthe body
Peripheral nervous system
nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body and environment
Somatic
serves outer area of the body and skeletal muscle ; voluntary
Autonomic
involuntary system ( heart , digestion )
Autonomic subdivisions
Parasympathetic - decrease activation during rest
Sympathetic - increase activation to prep for activity
Neuron
functional unit of the nervous system
Motor neuron
Efferent - transmit nerve impulses from CNS to effector sites
Sensory Neuron
Afferent - respond to stimuli; transmit nerve impulses from effector sites to CNS
Mechanoreceptors
sense distortion in body tissues
Nervous system Functions (3)
Sensory - changes in the environment
Integrative- analyze and interpret
Motor - The neuromuscular response
Joint receptors
Respond to pressure, acceleration, and deceleration of joints
Gogli Tendon Organs (GTO)
sense changes in Muscular tension
Muscle Spindles
sense changes in muscle length
