What do pts with polyps usually have?
allergic rhinitis
Why don’t you give ASA?
samter triad - asthma, nasal polyps
don’t use can cause brochospasm
What is the treatment?
3 mo steroids topically or surgery if large or unsuccessful tx
What are abnormal lesions that originate from any portion of the nasal mucosa or paranasal sinuses?
polyp
What is suspecious of a disease?
single polyps
What do multiple polyps occur with ?
chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, cystic fibrosis, allergic fungal sinusitis
What are the symptoms of nasal polyps?
anosmia and rhinitis, congestion
What will you see on PE of nasal polyps?
facial asymmetral or visible mass with ear or facial pain
Where do polyps being?
near the ethmoid sinuses in the middle meatus and extend into nose
What do you do when you see polyps?
get CT
What is the treatment of polyps?
steroids - burst then taper
Prednisone or methylprednisolone
then topical steroids
When is polyp surgery recommended?
inverted papillomas, choanal polyps and mucoceles
What are the common reasons for nasal obstruction include?
mucosal hypertrophy of inferior turbinates structural deformity of nasal airway foregin body large adenoids swelling of linig of nose from allergies
How can nasal obstruction present?
unilateral or bilateral
