Nasal Cavity, Sinuses, Hard palate Flashcards
What is significant about the roof of the sphenoid sinus?
it forms the floor of the hypophyseal fossa, therefore pituitary surgery can be done through it.
The ethmoid sinus (SA) is supplied by what nerve?
nasociliary branch of V1
sinusitis pain is from this nerve
which sinus has an opening into the nasal cavity?
spehnoidal sinus; if nose is damaged, could have CSF leakage into nose
Where do your maxillary sinuses drain?
into the semilunar hiatus located beneath the ethmoidal bulla in the middle meatus
Where does the sphenoid sinus drain?
sphenoethmoidal recess
where do the posterior ethmoid sinuses drain?
superior meatus
What all drains into the semilunar hiatus?
frontal sinus, maxillary sinus, and anterior ethmoid. (middle ethmoids into the bulla)
With sinusitis, why shouldn’t you take an antihistamine?
it will dry it out and won’t drain - can take decongestant
What is the role of the pterygopalatine ganglion?
innervation of glands of nasal cavity and lacrimal glands synapse here, and taste fibers travel through it w/o synapsing
What innervates the skin overlying the lacrimal gland?
V1; gland itself is innervated by CN VII
What are the two parasympathetic VE ganglia of CN VII?
submandibular and pterygopalatine ganglia
How do sympathetics travel to the nasal area?
from the plexus on the internal carotid, onto V2, then V1 to the lacrimal gland
How can you decrease tear production?
by decreasing the blood flow to the area
What nerve comes through palatine foramen to supply the lingual surface of incisors?
nasopalatine n. (V2)
What foramen connects the nasal cavity with the oral cavity?
incisive canal
