.Adverse effects: respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting & decrease intestinal motility

. Narcotic antagonists such as naloxone (Narcan®) should be on hand
Morphine sulfate

Morphine sulfate – very potent, addictive, raises pain threshold, produces sedation, & depresses respiration
Meperidine HCl (Demerol®)

– most common synthetic narcotic; used as a substitute for morphine because it does not depress respiration
Fentanyl citrate (Sublimaze®)

– used as adjunct to general anesthesia to relieve pain & produce sedation; 100x more potent than morphine; commonly used in short surgical procedures because of its short duration
