Anesthetic
– locally or topically.
Examples: Xylocaine®, Marcaine®, Sensorcaine®, Ophthaine®, Pontocaine®
Antibiotics
– to prevent or treat infections
- IV or topical (drops or ointment)
Irrigants
– to irrigate anterior chamber to keep cornea & eye tissue moist, to soak & rinse IOL (Intraocular Lens)
Examples: balanced salt solution (BSS) A-K Rinse®, Blinx®, and Irigate®
Miotics
– constrict pupil to reduce IOP; help prevent loss of vitreous humor in cataract surgery, administered in drops. Examples: carbachol (IsoptoCarbachol®), Miostat®, pilocarpine HCl (Pilocar®, Isoptocarpine®)
Mydriatics/cycloplegics
– paralytic agents used to dilate pupil prior to ophthalmoscopy; administered as eyedrops
Enzymes
– proteins that act as catalyst to speed up chemical reactions.
Examples: hyaluronidase (Wydase®) & alpha-chymotrypsin (Alpha-Chymar®, Zolyse®)
