What causes it?
A
Irritation between the skin and the nappy with the urine and faeces

What can happen in more severe cases of nappy rash?
A
The environment stimulates the growth of candida and staph and strep bacteria

What are risk factors for nappy rash?
A
- Poor absorbency nappies
- Not changing the nappy very frequently
- Irritant soaps and vigorous cleaning
- Diarrhoea
- Oral antibiotics
- Pre- term infants

Presentation
A
- Sore, red inflamed circular regions
- Does not spread to creases, groin
- Itchy- INFANT IN DISTRESS

How to distinguish simple nappy rash from candida infection
A
- Satellite lesions near main rash in candida infection
- Rash extends into folds
- Larger red macules
- Well demarcated with scaly lesions

Management
A
- Consider more absorbent nappies
- Change nappy as soon as possible after soiling
- Use water, alcohol free products
- Ensure nappy area is dry before applying new nappy
- Maximise time without nappy

How to treat candida infection?
A
- Antifungal creams e.g. Clotrimazole and miconazole
