Nano chemistry Flashcards
What is nano chemistry?
This is the study of the synthesis and characterization of nano materials.
What are nano materials?
Nano materials are materials with at least one external dimension in the 1-100nm range.
How are nano materials categorised?
Nano materials are categorised based on the number of dimensions the nano material has existing out of the 1-100nm range.
List the categories of nano materials.
- 0-D nano materials
- 1-D nano materials
- 2-D nano materials
- 3-D nano materials
What are zero dimension nano materials?
These are nano materials that have all their external dimensions measured in the 1-100nm range.
What are one dimension nano materials?
These are nano materials that have one external dimension existing outside the 1-100nm range.
What are the sources of nano materials?
- Natural sources.
- Anthropogenic sources.
Give the examples (preceded with their sources) of nano materials.
Natural sources: wings and skin found in animals
Anthropogenic sources: used in stained glass (different sizes giving the different colours), and nanotubes which are used in bicycles. They are also used to make quantum dots, which are semiconductors.
