Group II Elements Flashcards
Why does the solubility of group II sulphates decrease down the group?
This is because the hydration energy of sulphates get increasingly lower than the lattice energy with increasing cation size.
Why does the solubility of group II hydroxides increase down the group?
This is because of the rapidly decreasing lattice energy, which allows hydration to occur. Because of this dissolution, there are more OH- ions present in the solution, hence why it gets more basic.
Why does the stability of hydrides decrease down the group?
Hydride stability decreases down the group due to increasing atomic size; because of the greater distance between the hydride atoms, the bond between them can easily be broken.
