Chemistry Of Group I Elements Flashcards
1
Q
What are the physical properties of Group I?
A
- They conduct heat and electricity well.
- They are soft.
- They have low melting and boiling points.
- They are mostly silvery white metal solids (exception of Caesium; melts at 28°C)
- They give off characteristic colour in flame test.
- They are least electronegative.
- They have the largest atomic size and least first ionization energy.
2
Q
Why does melting point decrease down the group?
A
Decreasing metallic bond that results from increasing atomic size.
3
Q
What makes the first element of groups behave strangely compared to the rest of the group?
A
First elements have higher electronegativity and smaller size.
4
Q
What element does Lithium share some of its properties with?
A
Magnesium (Mg)
5
Q
What is diagonal relationship?
A
This is the resemblance of each of the first three elements in Period II to the elements diagonal to them in Period III.
