Chemistry Of Group VI Elements Flashcards
What are the elements of Group VI?
- Oxygen (O)
- Sulphur (S)
- Selenium (Se)
- Tellurium (The)
- Polonium (Po)
How is sulphur extracted from the ground deposit?
Sulphur is extracted from the ground by using three concentric pipes.
The outer tube lets in water at high temperature (165°C) into the deposite, heating and melting the sulphur.
Hot compressed air is passed through the innermost tube, frothing the sulphur and making it less dense so it can be pushed up through the second/middle tube to the surface.
Where does Germanium occur?
In trace amounts in some ores and coals.
How are silicon, tin, and germanium obtained?
They are obtained by the reduction of their oxides.
SiO2(l) + 2C(s) ==> SiO(l) + 2CO(g)
How is lead obtained from its ore (Galena)?
Galena is roasted in air to form lead oxide. This oxide is then reduced to give lead.
2PbS(s) + 3O2(g) ==> 2PbO(s) + 2SO2(g)
2PbO(s) + C(s) ==> 2Pb(s) + CO2(g)
What is allotropy?
Allotropy is the phenomenon of elements existing in two or more different forms but in the same physical state.
Allotropes of carbon include?
- Fullerenes (C60)
- Diamond
- Graphite
- Charcoal
- Carbon Black
- Coal
