naming Acids Flashcards
Base properties
Bitter
Slippery
Bases react with acids to produce salts and water
Acid properties
Sour
Corrosive
Conduct electric current
React with based to produce salts and water
Binary
Hydro-(anion)- add +ic
Contains two different elements, hydrogen and another electronegative element.
Oxyacid
Has oxygen No hydro- If -ate then add ic If -ite then add ous Taking the compound and adding ic Compound of hydrogen, oxygen, and a nonmetal
Conjugates only for
B/L
When determining if mono or polyprotic…
Look at the number of H’s
Arrenhius acid
Look at the product, increase H+ / H3O+
Arrhenius base
Will increase OH-
Ex. NH3+H20—
Ex of Arrhenius
KOH yields K+ +OH-
Double displacement
AY+BX yields BY+AX
Single displacement
A + BX yields B + AX
Strong acid vs weak acid
Strong: more attracted to H20 (breaks)
Weak: more attracted to other ions (breaks and reforms)
Strong vs weak base
Strong: completely ionize into metal and hydroxide ions
Weak: partially ionizes
Depends on how much the base dissociates or ionizes.
B/L base vs acid
Base: proton acceptor
Acid: proton donor
All Arrhenius acids are also
b/L acids
