Nab Flashcards
Biome
A region of the plane refined by its flora, fauna and climate
Community
All of the organisms present in an ecosystem
Ecosystem
All of the organisms living in a particular area and their non living counterparts
Habitat
Place where an organism lives
Niche
Role an organism plays within a community
Population
All of the organisms of one species found in a particular area
Species
A group of organisms capable of breeding with each other to produce fertile offspring
Abiotic factors
Non living Light Moisture Temperature pH wind speed Oxygen availability
Biotic factors
Living Grazing Competition Predation Disease
Example and affect of habitat destruction
Knocking down rainforest
Removal of biodiversity, climate change
Example and affect of pollution
Untreated sewage leaked into lakes and rivers, de-oxygenation of water and collapse of food chains
Hunting and fishing Example and affect
Extinction of species
Biodiversity
The variety of species present in the community of an ecosystem
Producers
Make their own food through photosynthesis
Consumers
Eat other organisms for energy
How much energy is available at the next stage of any food chain?
10%
What is energy transfer in food chains used for?
Growth - building new body tissue available at next level
Heat and movement - body temp and movement , not available
Undigested/ uneaten - contains chemical energy only available to decomposers eg bacteria and fungi
What is a pyramid of numbers?
Shows the total number of organisms at each level of the food chain (if it looks like a tree, the producer is a tree)
What is a pyramid of biomass?
Shows the weight of the organisms at each level (Usually pyramid shaped as an organism can’t weigh more than it eats)
What is a pyramid of energy?
Shows energy at each level of the food chain and is the most realistic way of represent energy levels in a food chain. Always shaped like a pyramid
