Oneida tribe brought case to SC to sue for the return of their lands. SC ruled in favour of tribe. Resulted in an increase in no. of actions taken by tribes to regain lands.
When was the Fisher v. Montana SC case?

What did the SC rule for the Fisher v. Montana case?
Previously, NA children had been forcibly removed from families as part of ‘Americanisation’ policy. The decision of the SC meant that in future tribal courts would decide on adoption.
Sig. because it was a further move towards the recognition of tribal courts.

What did the SC rule for the US v. Sioux Nation case?
SC ruling that one of the major tribes was entitled to sig. compensation for loss of lands. Encouraged others to pursue compensation for loss of Black Hills.
Sioux awarded $17.5 million w/ 5% interest a yr since 1877, which gave them another $106 mil. Sioux rejected the compensation as they wanted the return of their land.
When was the Seminole Tribe v. Butterworth SC case?

What did the SC rule for the Seminole tribe v. Butterworth case?
SC gave Seminole right to establish gambling enterprises on their tribal land. This went against state law but in doing so ruled that NA had rights on their own land.

SC ruled that remains dug from burial grounds in Louisiana belonged to NA. As result states passed laws protecting NA burial lands.
