Lead to Smith v. Allwright SC ruling in 1944 - unconstitutional for AA to be excluded from primary party voting.
Why was WWII not significant tp politically?
Smith v. Allwright was not effective and was not enforced - there was still voter discrimination and the 1965 VRA was still required.
No other major changes.
Why was WWII significant tp in terms of AAs social situation?
Allied forces propaganda - discredited racism and encouraged campaigners to continue their campaigns.
Led to the founding of Congress of Racial Equality.
Philip Randolph pressured Truman to end segregation in armed forces 1948 - may have partly been due to AA contribution.
Why was WWII not significant tp for AA in terms of their social situation?
There were no major changes - Jim Crow in South, segregation.
Continued resistance to civil rights - Birmingham ‘63.

More opportunities for AA workers especially women in industry and other jobs traditionally done by men.
Opportunities for promotion.
Migration north where there were more jobs.

Economic improvements were short term, jobs went back to the men returning from war - Serviceman’s Readjustment Act 1944.
No improvement in education until Little Rock.

1965 Voting Rights Act - put 15th Am. into law.
Had SC on side - United States v. Mississippi 1965, overturned Mississippi law discriminating against voter registration.

1964 Civil Rights Act - ended the Jim Crow laws, what AA had been campaigning for.

The Great Society set up w/ the aim to help the economy and workers.

Most of the money for the Great Society was used on Vietnam instead and v. little helped AA.
During this time there was urban rioting leading to downturn in ghetto communities due to white backlash. MLK’s Poor Ppl campaign may have been success but he died before he finished it.
