Myology 1.2 neck palpation and treatment Flashcards
SCM most common source for referred pain for
3
Frontal headache
Orbital headache (migraine pain)
Vertex (top of the head)
Vertebrae
Widest transverse process
C1
SCM Cautions
Common carotid artery
Lies just deep to the medial surface of the muscle
Has a strong pulse
Stiff neck muscles
Levator scapula
Splenius cervicis
Sternocleidomastoid work 1
RELEASE TRIGGER POINTS
Client supine, head laterally flexed toward side being treated
-release trigger points along muscle belly with static compression if present (treat heads separately)
Sternocleidomastoid work 2
CROSS FIBER FRICTION
Client supine, head laterally flexed toward side being treated
- cross fiber friction (mastoid process, manubrium & clavicle)
Sternocleidomastoid work 3
FINGERTIP GLIDES
Client supine, head laterally flexed toward side being treated
-glide superiorly with flexed fingertips starting midway on SCM towards and over mastoid process of temporal bone. repeat
splenius capitis and cervicis work 1
THUMB GLIDES
client supine
- thumb glides in lamania groove C1-C7
- slow thumb glide from mastoid process inferiorly and medially, just anterior to trapezius
splenius capitis and cervicis work 2
STATIC COMPRESSION
client supine
-static compression on any triggerpoints found (note that trigger points in splenius cervicis and levator scapula often cause pain associated with stiff neck)
splenius capitis and cervicis work 3
STATIC COMPRESSION
client PRONE
- thumb glides in lamina groove from T6-Mastoid process
splenius capitis and cervicis work 2
STATIC COMPRESSION
client PRONE
-static compression on any triggerpoints found
The superior attachment of splenius capitis is found
deep to the superior attachment of the SCM on the mastoid process and superior nuncal line
Levator scapula work 1
THUMB GLIDES
client prone
thumb glides on the belly from insertion (superior angle of the scapula) to origin (C1-4 transverse processes)
Levator scapula work 2
STATIC COMPRESSION
client prone
static compression on any trigger points found
note that trigger points in splenius cervicis and levator scapula often cause pain associated with stiff neck
Levator scapula work 3
FRICTION INSERTION
client prone
insertion at the superior angle of the scapula
